I was reading a song review recently and the writer had an understandable bee in their bonnet about song lyrics that focus too much on grandstanding, telling the world how great they are and calling out their haters.
But everything has it’s place.
I do always find it odd though that artists that write love songs aren’t lambasted for yet another love song. I suppose the counterargument to that is that love is multifaceted and complex but an anthem calling out your opps can be too.
I mean, of course, it doesn’t carry the same weight but with the right writer or a good beat or both, blasting out your achievements to everyone in hearing distance can be a hit. I suppose a whole album of that sentiment could be tiresome but I still contend that if each individual song is good, if that’s your niche, then brag away.
And if you can’t vibe with it, I think that just clearly punctuates the fact that type of music isn’t for you. That’s okay, not everything is for everyone.
And sometimes having a hype song makes all the difference. “I Will Always Love You” isn’t going to get me going. “My Heart Will Go On” isn’t going to help me face my haters. Sometimes I need an unapologetically impactful song to make me feel big, strong, confident, better than everyone else.
Like I said, everything has a time and place.
Now if the song is actually a sack of shit, that’s a different conversation but it’s not bad purely based on subject matter.
